Pinkham Wood Alliance: "Traffic and Congestion!"


"There are many concerns that we have about the impact of this proposal on traffic and congestion in our community.

"Access to the site will be via the roundabout at the junction of Pegasus Way with Orion Road (locally known as the retail park roundabouts). Of particular concern is the junction of Colney Hatch Lane with the North Circular, through which every truck and every vehicle going to the ‘Eco Park’ will need to pass.

"Local residents are already familiar with the phenomenon of the ‘Tesco Tailback’. The junction is so congested already that vehicles are unable to escape from the Tesco car park, backing up the traffic so much that vehicles queuing to enter block the junction.

"And what about the retail park? It has never been particularly successful, but the new mega B&Q store, to open soon on the site, will have a massive impact on traffic at that junction. And the increased traffic will not even be included in the NLWA traffic evaluation survey.

"Other areas of concern are Colney Hatch Lane and the junction with Alexandra Park Road. This is another well known area for traffic snarls. The NLWA are quick to reassure us that Sydney Road will not be used by their trucks, and we believe them. But with all the extra traffic, will Haringey Council be obliged to remove the blockades on Grosvenor Road and Muswell Avenue, to take pressure off Colney Hatch Lane?

"And what about the health implications? Here’s a simple equation:
Increased Traffic

Increased Congestion 
>> 
Increased Pollution 
>> 
Increased Mortality

"What's more polluting than a very busy road? A very busy road in gridlock, engines running, but not going anywhere.

"Coppetts Ward in Barnet already has the highest mortality rate in Barnet. Is the North Circular which slices through the ward a contributary factor? Extra pollution from vehicles travelling to and from the site can only exacerbate this problem.

"And what about the ambulance station on Colney Hatch Lane? How will this proposal affect response times? And don’t forget there are two major bus routes, all trying to get through the same junction.

"And on top of all the additional traffic for the waste plant, they have decided to move the entire fleet of Barnet Council refuse vehicles from centrally-located Mill Hill to Haringey on the periphery of the borough - what on earth were they thinking?
