"A BARNET politician has hailed a major delay in plans to build a waste plant in New Southgate.

"Barry Rawlings, deputy leader of Barnet Labour Group, said:

“I welcome the recent announcements by Enfield and Haringey councils, which are taking pause to seriously consider the adverse impact of this waste treatment plant on local people.

The Labour team in Barnet will continue to work with local residents to fight this disastrous proposal. I have asked to speak at the public inquiry into the 'North London Waste Plan', to ensure that residents’ views are taken into account.”

"As local Labour councillors for Coppetts ward in Barnet, we have consistently opposed the plans for Pinkham Way. As well as standing alongside demonstrators, we forced a vote at Council to reject the NLWA Plan, but we were out-voted by the Conservative administration.

"We recognise that Barnet has an extra responsibility, as there could be no treatment plant without Barnet selling the land to the NLWA. We are worried by the effects on local air quality and the traffic system – and we ask NLWA to reconsider, and seek a site which can use rail and waterway, rather than only road access.

"We will continue to support and fight alongside the Pinkham Way Alliance, to defeat this scheme."
