Some more 'modern' incinerators than in this animation are called 'gasifiers', where the first-stage burning is done in restricted air. That produces gases, which are then burned separately.
This animation is similar to the current 'mass-burn incinerator' in Edmonton. The NLWA says this plant will be replaced by a copy of the intended 'Pinkham Way Incinerator Fuel Plant', and the fuel from both sites would be transported elsewhere for burning.)

"The Edmonton incinerator complex is going to be 'replaced' as part of an overhaul of waste management in north and east London, a councillor has said.
"Councillor Clyde Loakes, chairman of the North London Waste Authority (NLWA), made the surprise announcement at a meeting last week, speaking in his role as environment chief at Waltham Forest Council."
