Letter to Cllr Doug Taylor – Leader of Enfield Council
'Doug' |
"I am writing to you today as a matter of urgency, to request that you formally object to the North London Waste Plan (NLWP), upon the basis of Pinkham Way being included as the preferred site for increasing North London’s capacity for waste management.
"I have seen from communications in the press and answers at the forthcoming Council meeting, that Councillors are keen to ascribe blame for the plan, but the reality of the situation is that now is the time to put party politics to one side. Enfield Council ha,s along with the other six other boroughs, signed up to the NLWP, as confirmed by Cllr Chris Bond signing the forward of the plan in May 2011.
"The present Council therefore has to be held to account for doing so, and challenged if it maintains its support for the plan (which includes Pinkham Way), despite the overwhelming opposition in wards most affected by the proposal, in Palmers Green, Bowes and Southgate Green.
"My constituents are very concerned about the impact on traffic congestion and air quality from the waste management site and depot, which may well degenerate an area which is taking important steps in regeneration. Please put them out of their misery, by formally objecting to the NLWP, or at least withdrawing the Council’s support for the NLWP, pending further consultation and consideration of alternatives.
"I appreciate that you will not want to pre-determine the view of the Planning Committee, and will be concerned to point out the history of the process dating back to 2009, but I would urge you not to hide behind the previous administration’s decisions, or the forthcoming planning application process. There are two distinct processes, with the planning application still to be validated, but the NLWP subject to consultation.
"I do not want your view on the planning application, but I and my constituents do want to hear the Council’s formal view, about whether it supports the NLWP, in terms of its inclusion of the Pinkham Way site. At the very least, there needs to be clarity of the Council’s formal position on the NLWP.
"Does the Council continue to support the plan, as evidenced by Cllr Chris Bond signature [sic] or is the current view that of Cllr Achilleas Georgiou, who has said publically that he has 'deep objections', and has written in a leaflet this week, under the banner of 'No to Pinkham Way' that it is a 'morally and ecologically wrong' solution?
"We have until Friday 8th July to make representations about the NLWP. The Council has the opportunity to register objections to Pinkham Way being included as an option for massive waste management. Plainly, if the Council registered such objections, it would have a fundamental affect [We say, for the last time: Affect is a VERB. Effect is the NOUN.] on the progress of the plan for Pinkham Way.
"Please join me in standing up for my constituents in Palmers Green, Bowes and Southgate Green, who agree in substantial numbers that the proposal is in the wrong place at the wrong time.
"I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely, David Burrowes MP

[We say: Play down the 'Oliver Letwin' connection, it doesn't do anything for you.]
